Nominations sought
for Green Medal awards

We are looking at Christmas trees now, but it is time to consider nominating people, businesses and civic groups for the tree-friendly Green Medals the town awards each year as part of its activities as a Tree City USA.

The Green Medal Awards recognize individuals, groups and businesses that promote good environmental stewardship and excellence in service while demonstrating an unwavering commitment to the enhancement of the town’s urban forest. The Wake Forest Urban Forestry Board votes on the nominations, and the winners are announced at the Arbor Day Celebration, which will be Thursday, March 13, this coming year.

The categories for the medals are:

ü      Civic, given to an individual, a civic club or an organization that has shown outstanding service, education, tree-planting or other volunteer-based work.

ü      Corporate, given to a company or business which exhibits a pattern of commitment to the environment, or which has made a significant contribution to the urban forest through an internal education program, a self-initiated tree planting or other outreach project.

ü      Program or Project, designed to honor a program or project which promotes good urban forestry or environmental practice, or to a development which has shown excellence in tree preservation or landscaping. Only those developments which exceed town requirements or meet them by using particularly creative methods such as innovative planting or design will be considered.

ü      Community Forester is intended to honor a lifetime or career of excellence in urban forestry or leadership in environmental integrity and practice. The recipient’s service should be demonstrated as having a significant impact on the community.

Go to www.wakeforestnc.gov for nomination forms or go to the Wake Forest Planning Office, 221 S. Brooks St. Mail them to Lisa Potts, Town of Wake Forest, 401 East Elm Ave., Wake Forest NC 27587, fax them 554-6607 or e-mail them to lpotts@wakeforestnc.gov. They must be received by 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25.
