Economic development
on board’s agenda

A representative from the Wake Forest Chamber of Commerce will tell the town commissioners about the past efforts and the future plans for economic development during the commissioners’ work session Thursday, Jan. 3 (tonight).

The meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. in town hall.

At least part of the presentation will focus on the study done by the Sanford Holshouser Business Development Group, which said the town needs to aggressively market itself to attract the types of industry and business that would fit best – medical, biotech and pharmaceutical, medical, biotech and pharmaceutical, creative design, retirement and healthcare, tourism and hospitality, and electronic manufacturing.

At the same time, the study said, the town needs to nurture and support its existing businesses. (The full article about the study and the local meeting is in the Nov. 29, 2007, issue of the Gazette, headed “Consultants list ways to shape growth.”

The chamber is responsible for the town’s economic development program and the town is providing $32,000 this year for the efforts, money kept in a separate account. The chamber received more in past years – $42,000 in fiscal 2004-2005, $36,000 in fiscal 2005-2006 – but that went to $32,000 in fiscal 2006-2007. The request for this year’s funding for $32,000 stated the chamber would ask for the same amount in future years.

The town board will also hear a report from the Greenway Advisory Board, perhaps from Chairman Joe Seigler,

The board will also review the revised stormwater ordinance. Town engineer Scott Miles sent out an e-mail on Dec. 21 saying there was a low turnout at the last meeting to discuss the second phase ordinance. He asked that anyone on the town board, the planning board or the town staff who has questions or concerns call him to discuss those. Miles also included eight concerns that had been voiced at recent meetings and the answers. As Miles said in an earlier meeting, this second phase of stormwater management addresses the quality of the stormwater; the first phase addressed the quantity.

The board will end the meeting by reviewing the agenda for its Jan. 15 meeting.
