Fire Department board of directors approved a
$3.6 million budget for fiscal 2007-2008, an
increase of 42 percent over the present year.

Mark Fleming, who has led the
Wake Forest Chamber of Commerce for eight years
during a time of tremendous growth for both the
organization and the town, announced Tuesday he
is leaving to become the executive vice
president NCFREE in Raleigh. His last day will
be Friday, March 23.

Brassfield Fire Department, which
covers the southern end of Granville County, is
a department in need, and last Thursday their
fellow firefighters in Wake Forest met part of
it.

Neuse River Foundation
wins conservation award |
|
The Neuse River Foundation, which
strives to protect the river from its headwaters
until it empties into the Pamlico Sound, was
named the Conservation Organization of the Year
Saturday by the North Carolina Wildlife
Federation.

Allen Montague opens gallery |
Raleigh artist Allen Montague opened his
Collector’s Gallery at 216 E. Jones Ave. last
week with a reception during Friday evening’s
Art After Hours.
The small house next to The Sunflower Studio has
been decorated in his individual style and
filled with a selection of his works in several
media. He is offering discounts on framed prints
and originals, custom framing, workshops and
signed prints through the end of March.

Basketball free throw
contest updated |
There were some errors in the
information submitted earlier for the annual
Knights of Columbus free throw competition. The
following information is correct.
The free throw contest, designed to be fun and
entertaining for boys and girls ages 10 through
14, will be held Saturday, Feb. 17, from 1 to 4
p.m. at The Grand Slam Sports Center in The
Factory on South Main Street.

Seedling giveaway
set for March 10 |
The annual giveaway of tree
seedlings by the town’s Urban Forestry Board
will be Saturday, March 10, at town hall.
The forestry board is also making plans for the
annual Arbor Day Celebration on March 27 at the
Community House on West Owen Avenue. During
their January meeting, board members selected
the winners of the poster contest.
In other projects, the board and its staff
liaison Potts are overseeing a number of
tree-plantings: along the new sidewalks on
Stadium Drive and North Allen Road, complete the
plantings at Paschal Golf Course, along the
street to Lowe’s Home Improvement, moving trees
along Retail Drive from underneath utility
lines, along Star Road from the former Chris
Leith site to the current site, additional
plantings at the Capital Boulevard and South
Main intersection and at the Capital Boulevard
and Durham Road intersection, more plantings in
the downtown parking lots and along the N.C. 98
bypass. |

Gardener Volunteers – Liz Ford, Hugh Nourse and
John Pelosi – will be at the Wake Forest Library
Wednesday, Feb. 21, to share some gardening
expertise about the warming climate and other
topics and answer questions.

Tuesday night the Wake Forest
commissioners will have to decide whether to
spend about $1.1 million to widen the two-lane
portion of South Main Street to three lanes or
build a sidewalk along North White Street.

It takes more water
for bigger house fires |
|
Two large houses in subdivisions
outside the Wake Forest town limits have been
destroyed by fire in less than a year: the house
on Welcome Drive in Waterfall subdivision in
March of 2006 and the very recent fire in the
house on Mica Mine Lane.

Lobster Bingo
returns March 2 |
The Wake Forest Kiwanis Club will
repeat its wildly successful night of Lobster
Bingo on Friday, March 2, from 5:30 to 9 p.m. at
The Factory.
Admission is free and refreshments will be
served. Bring the whole family for an evening of
fun, President Peter Kima said.

The United States Secret Service
has asked the Wake Forest Police Department and
area merchants to be alert for counterfeit $50
bills that are circulating in the Raleigh-Wake
County area.
