The reasons are unclear, but there were
substantially fewer residential building
permits issued in January of 2007 as
compared to those in January of 2006, 26
versus 66.
There certainly are
subdivisions left to fill – Bowling
Green, Austin Creek, Bishop’s Grant, for
example – and the housing market in the
Triangle remains fairly steady.
January did have some
interesting permits. Devere Construction
was issued two, one to renovate the
interior of the former Winn-Dixie on
Durham Road (N.C. 98) and another for a
construction trailer.
Court One, a Youngsville
firm, received a permit and has begun
clearing and grading to build the four
lighted tennis courts at Flaherty Park
on North White Street. It is part of the
park expansion, the third development
phase, paid by park bonds voters
approved in 2005. Other construction
will be a picnic shelter, a dog park and
a playground. The new tennis courts will
be located near the park’s community
center and the three existing lighted
courts.

White St., after a smoky fire Friday,
Jan. 12.
Two permits for two houses
on East Jones Avenue were an
administrative technique to take the
buildings off the tax rolls and list of
existing houses, Rhonda Alderman with
the Wake Forest Planning Department
said. John Lyon and one of his
corporations, BAJO, were listed as the
applicants, but there was no request,
Alderman said. Lyon had owned The
Appraisal House at the corner of Brooks
and the next-door house where Vivian
Jones and Jonnie Anderson operated
jovi’s Kitchen and Market. Lyon sold The
Appraisal House to the Renaissance
Investors Group – Mike Johnson, Matt
Hale and Charles Grantham – in 2006 and
the jovi’s building to Jones and
Anderson in 2002, who in turn sold to
the Renaissance group last year. The two
houses were burned by the Wake Forest
Fire Department in October as training
exercises, and the Renaissance group
plans a multi-use building there.
Marty Ludas who, with his
wife, Debbie, purchased the gray
Victorian House and the brick two-story
building next door on North Avenue
earlier this year, asked for a permit to
do something with a non-load bearing
wall.
