The
Town of Wake Forest will hold a public meeting about the new plan to widen
South Main Street on Thursday, Oct. 25, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. in town hall.
The
plan is to widen the short section of the street from two to three lanes with
curb and gutter from Forbes Road to Forestville Road.
All
the affected residents along the street have been sent individual notices.
Deputy Town Manager
Roe O’Donnell has said the project will cost between $1.1 and $1.3 million
because “very little right-of-way acquisition” will be necessary. Assistant
Town Engineer Holly Spring said the dedicated right-of-way along that stretch
of street is 60 feet in most places.
The
money will come from the $9.5 million bond issue approved in the spring of
2005. At that time, $1 million was earmarked to widen South Main from Rogers
Road to Forbes Road. Last fall residents overwhelmingly disapproved the town’s
plan for four travel lanes divided by a 4-foot concrete median that would have
prevented left turns.
Construction
should take place next spring.
Kimley-Horn
Associates has a $196,774 contract for the engineering and design.
If
you have questions in advance of the meeting, please call Spring at 554-3158 or
O’Donnell at 554-6121.
