Last year more than 400 people of all
ages went to the Wake Forest Boys &
Girls Club one Saturday and packaged
over 63,000 meals to send to the
starving people throughout the world.
This year the Wake Forest
Rotary Club and Stop Hunger Now want to
do the same thing, but they need the
money to buy the rice and other dry
ingredients for the nutritious meals.
That is why they are sending
out an appeal to the Wake Forest
community, both individuals and
businesses, to help. The ingredients for
each meal cost only 20 cents, $50 buys
enough for 250 meals, and $100 pays for
500 meals.
“Every dollar is spent on
meals. Not one dollar goes to
administration cost,” Craig Helmers, a
Rotary Club member, said.
The club just began calling
on possible corporate sponsors, and
Helmers said, “They are typically
telling me they need to send it up the
ranks to the corporate headquarters for
approval.” The only firm sponsors thus
far are Harris-Teeter, Triangle Lending
Group and The Wake Forest Gazette.
The second food drive is
planned for Sept. 29 at the Boys & Girls
Club, and Helmers and other Rotary Club
members are urging people to commit to
an hour or so, to bring the children and
the grandparents to make it family
event. Please leave the dog at home.
If you want to make a pledge
of time, call Helmers at 272-8739 or at
