Another half-mile section of Wake
Forest’s greenway system will be
officially opened on Thursday, Aug. 2,
and area residents are invited to join
town officials in the ribbon-cutting
ceremony at 6:30 p.m. at the Olde Mill
Stream sales office at 901 Barnford Mill
Road just off Harris Road.
The 10-foot asphalt
multi-use trail along the east side of
Richland Creek is part of the planned
north-south arterial greenway which will
eventually reach to the Franklin County
line to the north, to Joyner Park to the
south and connect with other sections of
the greenway system. You can see the
entire plan for the town’s greenways at
http://www.wakeforestnc.gov/residents/
planningzoning_plans.aspx.
The new greenway now begins at the sales
office and runs north to end just north
of Littlehampton Court at Barnford Mill
Road and can be used by bikers, hikers,
walkers or amblers who want to enjoy the
scenic views and the quiet.
Greenways are not only
linear open spaces for human
recreational use, they are also a means
to protect and enhance natural
resources. The greenway will help
improve the water quality of Richland
Creek by establishing a permanent buffer
that will serve as a natural filter,
trapping pollutants from runoff, erosion
and agricultural lands.
The Olde Mill Stream project
was partly funded by the North
Carolina Department of Transportation
Enhancement Program. The initiative
endeavors to improve the cultural,
aesthetic and environmental aspects of
North Carolina’s transportation system
and promote diverse modes of
transportation.
