            For the first six months of 2007, permits for only 336 homes have been issued, which could mean an increase of under 800 new homes this year. The town commissioners have set a goal of 800 or fewer homes each year to stretch the water allocation in the merger contract with Raleigh as far as possible. Earlier, it was thought desirable to have a residential growth rate of between 800 and 1,000 homes to pay off the cost of water/sewer merger earlier.

            In 2004, permits for 1,116 homes were issued, a startling increase of 15.6 percent in the number of homes in town. The rate of residential growth remained high in 2005 when permits were issued for 1,005 homes, a 12 percent increase, with a slight cooling in 2006 when 906 residential permits were issued, a rate of 9.8 percent.

            Only 69 permits for homes were issued in June of this year, far fewer than the number of irrigation permits. That 69 breaks down to 57 single-family homes, four condominiums, four townhouses and four duplexes.

            The town also issued the building permit for the new Heritage High School on Forestville Road, where construction will be $52 million of the total $58 million cost. The school is scheduled to open in July of 2009. This is the third use of the Knightdale High School prototype. The Town of Wake Forest will have a park on the site.

            The town itself applied for a permit to put a new roof or repair the roof at the DuBois gym on North Franklin St.
