 Forget about Spot

He – or is it a she – is a Dalmatian and the dog does have spots, but certainly some of our uniformly above-average youngsters in Wake Forest can find a more creative name than Spot.

Children up to 12 are being asked for their suggestions to name the dog portrait that has a place of honor at the Wake Forest Fire Department Station #1 on East Elm Avenue. Dick Larsen painted the portrait, one in a series of dogs, and donated it to the department. The firefighters came up with the idea of a dog-naming contest.

The entries will be accepted through Tuesday, Jan. 16, after which a committee from the fire department will read them, judge them and declare a winner. Children can leave their entries at the fire station, at the Blue Fins Bistro and at The Cotton Company. Or you can enter online at Larsen’s web site, www.dicklarsenart.com. Click on the dog portraits button and the Dalmatian icon, then scroll down to the comment box to enter your favorite dog name along with your name, address and telephone number.

The winner will be announced at a formal unveiling of the portrait.
