Beginning at 5 a.m. Friday, May 4, and
lasting until 5 a.m. the following
morning, Falls Lake State Park Ranger
Brian Bockhahn will be walking through
the state park area at Falls Lake,
counting birds, mammals, reptiles,
amphibians, butterflies, fireflies,
dragonflies, damsel flies, moths, fish
and wild flowers.
“Being an insomniac pays off
sometimes,” Bockhahn said in an e-mail
announcing his seventh annual
wild-a-thon to people who have supported
him in the past.
He takes pledges before and
after the event with the money going to
local and state Audubon Society
projects. For example, if you want to
donate a dollar for every reptile and he
sees 10 during the 24 hours, you make
out a check payable to the Audubon
Birdathon for $10.
He will be trying to see
between 80 and 110 kinds of birds, eight
to 12 species of mammals.
