 Monday’s wind
knocked out power

The ferocious winds Monday toppled some trees, damaged or destroyed some vehicles and interrupted electric power in some parts of Wake Forest, but the damage was not as severe as in other parts of the state.

A healthy oak on the former Sledd property at South Avenue and South College fell over, crushed a truck and damaged three other vehicles. “The ground was wet and the wind was blowing,” Town Manager Mark Williams said. South College Street was blocked until about 5:30 p.m.

“We had a tree blow down on Old N.C. 98 which knocked out power from Crenshaw Hall to Thompson Mill Road from about 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.,” Public Works Director Mike Barton said.

That outage affected Greystone North and South, Crenshaw Hall, Crenshaw Manor and homes along Old 98 and Thompson Mill.

“Another limb fell across a three-phase line on Durham Road at Oakwood, causing one phase to burn in two,” Barton said. That occurred about 1 p.m., interrupting power in that area until 4 p.m.

“All repairs to the electric system were made without injuries by Wake Forest Power. The tree cleanup was done by both Wake Forest Power and the street division,” Barton said.
