Get
out your waders, boots, gloves and
canoes! April 14 is the day to hit the
water and the banks to clean up the
Neuse – once again, to be sure, but
maybe, someday all the trash-throwers
will tune into the message.
In the meantime, the Neuse
River Foundation is counting on the
wonderful folks who have turned out for
four years to clean the 50 miles of the
river from Falls Dam to Smithfield.
Upper Neuse Riverkeeper Dean
Naujoks began the clean-up to merge
several small clean-ups, and the first
year 70 volunteers cleaned 20 miles of
the river. Now the City of Raleigh
provides extra trash pick-ups and Wake
County waives the landfill fees.
Even though it may seem
discouraging to clean the same stretch
of river on an annual basis, observers
say the cleaned sections are staying
cleaner. And last year the volunteers
were able to pull two rusting cars from
Crabtree Creek. This year’s goal is a
submerged garbage dumpster.
If you cannot join the group
on the river, clean up a portion of the
stream behind or beside your house, the
road or street in front of your house or
send a donation to the Neuse River
Foundation to help support the clean-up
effort. The telephone is 856-1180 and
the website is
