It has only been on the air since
February and already the town’s monthly
information program, “Focus on Wake
Forest,” has won a prestigious award.
The Annual Telly Awards
honors the best in local, regional and
cable television commercials and
programs. There are more than 13,000
entries each year, and some of the past
recipients are Microsoft, NBA
Entertainment, Nickelodeon, Nike Inc.
and Black Entertainment Television.
It was actually that very
first program that Charles Martin, who
is the president and staff of Media Guru
(MG Communications), submitted for
consideration. It dealt with the H.O.P.E.
Program, maintenance work on the town’s
electric system and the new automated
meter-reading program.
“I think they’ve gotten
better since then,” Bill Crabtree, the
town’s communication specialist, said.
Crabtree came up with the
idea for “Focus,” which airs on
Community Channel 10, and Martin films
and edits it.
“It’s a mutual award,”
Martin said. “What we do on a small
scale is pretty tremendous. We shoot the
series (for the month) in one day. Bill
does a wonderful job coordinating the
staff.”
There is no money for the
award, just a statuette. “I think that’s
a big honor in itself,” Martin said.
“For me, it’s big, and for just starting
out, to be able to compete with those
guys is awesome.”
Martin has been running
Media Guru in town for three years and
recently left his job with the North
Carolina Electric Membership
Corporation. He is the vice chairman of
the Human Relations Council.
You will see him filming
town events such as the Arbor Day
celebration, and Saturday you will find
him, Crabtree, Downtown Manager Tina
Archer and Terri Wilkinson, an
organizer, at the Wake Forest Farmers’
Market, filming the action for the May
program.
“Focus on Wake Forest” airs
on Channel 10 on Sundays, Mondays,
Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 10
a.m., 2 p.m., 6 p.m. and 10 p.m.
