 Arbor Day winners
announced

Heritage Golf Club and Contentnea Creek Development Company, which is building the Bishop’s Grant subdivision on Wait Avenue, have been awarded the town’s Green Medal Awards for this year.

They will receive their awards Thursday, March 22, during the Arbor Day celebration in the Community House on West Owen Avenue. The happy celebration begins at 10 a.m.

Also, the Wake Forest Urban Forestry Board has selected the following winners in the poster contest:

  • Best Picture - Genie Richards, a fourth-grader at Heritage Elementary.

  • State Entry - Jala Robinson, a fifth-grader at Jones Dairy Elementary.

  • Most Creative – Josh Coates, a fifth-grader at Jones Dairy Elementary.

  • Honorable Mention – Taylor Trotter, a fourth-grader who is home schooled.

More than 50 children painted posters for the contest, which was judged on the artwork, creativity and depiction of this year’s theme: “Trees are terrific … and forests are too!”

The winners will receive a certificate and a $50 savings bond. Richards’ entry will be printed on this year’s Arbor Day T-shirts and coffee mugs. Robinson’s poster will be entered in state competition which ends in a national contest.

Bethany Patterson of Brevard College will be the speaker this year. Her group, Leave No Trace, promotes responsible outdoor recreation combined with good environmental stewardship and teaches how to minimally impact the environment.

Many people come for the entertainment provided by elementary school students. This year first graders from Jones Dairy Elementary plan a skit, Assignment Earth.

Heritage Golf Club won the Corporate Green Medal Award, given to a local company or business that show a pattern of commitment to the environment or has made a significant contribution to the urban forest.

Contentnea Creek will be given the Project Green Medal Award for an area project or program promoting good urban forestry or environmental practice. Only those developments which exceed the town’s requirements or meet them in innovative ways are considered.

During the program, the town will accept its 28th consecutive Tree City USA award.
