Free
tree seedlings – Eastern Red Cedar,
Redbud, Shumard Oak and Green Ash – will
be given away to town and area residents
Friday, March 3, at the Wake Forest Town
Hall at 401 Elm Avenue.
The giveaway is a
collaboration of the Wake Forest Urban
Forestry Board (which used to be the
tree board), the Wake Forest Woman’s
Club and Jordan Tree Care. Members of
the Wake Forest Junior Woman’s Club and
the urban forestry board, which includes
Pete Jordan, former owner of the tree
care company, will be the volunteers
giving away the seedlings.
The event will begin at 10
a.m. and continue to 1 p.m. or until all
the seedlings are gone. Although they
are free, there is a limit of two
seedlings per person. They come with
information about planting and care, as
well as interesting information about
the trees.
Each year the urban forestry
board sponsors a tree seedling giveaway
as part of the town’s observance of
Arbor Day.
This year’s Arbor Day
celebration will be held Thursday, March
16, at 10 a.m. at the Community House on
West Owen Avenue. The public is
encouraged to attend the free event
which features songs by elementary
school children, announcement of the
poster contest winners, an address by a
forester and presentation of the annual
Green Medal awards which can be given to
people, businesses and groups who have
supported and encouraged good forestry
efforts. The Wake Forest Woman’s Club
and the Garden Club will provide
refreshments.
