The
Wake Forest Community Council is now
accepting nominations for the 2006
Organization/Club of the Year, Citizen
of the Year and the Peggy Allen Lifetime
Achievement Award.
The council will vote by
secret ballot on the nominations during
its November meeting. The winners will
be announced at the Wake Forest Holiday
Dinner Dec. 5 at The Forks Cafeteria.
Mark Roberts, the traffic reporter for
WRAL-TV and a Wake Forest resident, will
be the master of ceremonies.
The Citizen of the Year
award honors a person – and sometimes a
married couple or a family – who has
made substantial or outstanding
contributions to the town during the
past year or several years.
The Organization or Club of
the Year award is given in recognition
of the efforts and activities of a club
or group during the past year or several
years.
The Peggy Allen Lifetime
Achievement Award was began last year
and awarded posthumously to Allen, who
died in November. To be eligible, a
person must have been involved in
volunteer service for a significant
portion of his or her life, and at least
five years of that service must have
been in Wake Forest.
The Wake Forest community
has been holding this open holiday
dinner since 1965, when Eleanor Reid was
named the first Citizen of the Year. In
1977, the tradition of naming a club or
organization was begun, and the Wake
Forest Garden Club was the first
recipient. The club also traditionally
provides the table decorations.
The community council meets
the second Wednesday of the month at
noon at The Forks Cafeteria. The
hour-long, Dutch-treat lunch meetings
provide time for each local club, group,
organization or individual to share
information about events and concerns.
Dues are $10 a year.
Nomination forms for the
three awards are available at the Wake
Forest Chamber of Commerce at 350 S.
White St., at the Wake Forest Town Hall
at 401 E. Elm Ave., and at The Wake
Weekly, 229 E. Owen Ave.
The completed forms must be
returned to the chamber office by 11:45
a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 8. |
