 From the chamber
Spanish class begins Monday

Need to learn Spanish to properly serve your customers or to advance in your job?

The Wake Forest Chamber of Commerce is offering a four-week course held on Mondays from 5 to 7 p.m. in the chamber conference room.

The cost is $25 per class, $80 for the whole series for members or $35 and $140 for nonmembers. The cost includes dinner.

You will need to register by Friday, Oct. 13. Either call the chamber at 556-1519 or e-mail Darren O’Connor at darren@wakeforestchamber.org.

Thanks to a lot of people who could – or could not – spell their way out of a paper bag, the Wake Forest Chamber of Commerce raised $10,000 last year that went directly to area teachers for special projects and special equipment.

The 11th annual Spelling Bee will be held Thursday, Nov. 9, beginning at 6 p.m. at Wake Forest-Rolesville High School, and the hopes are the teams will raise even more money for teachers this year.

In a way, the goal is to misspell a word. And that is after due consultation with your team members. If you do misspell a word, you can either buy your way back into the game or persuade someone in the audience to bail you out. You will be “helped” along the way by Mark Roberts of WRAL-TV.

You can enter your business team, or you can sponsor a team of teachers. Registration forms are in the chamber newsletter or available from Tresa Jalot, the deputy director, at 556-1519 or tresa@wakeforestchamber.org.

The law firm of Warren, Perry & Anthony will once again host the October Business After Hours on Thursday, Oct. 19, with their traditional Brunswick stew and banana pudding in the parking lot.

In fact, they will be doing it for years to come because the chamber directors have decided two firms will become the standard BAH hosts: Warren, Perry & Anthony in October and SunTrust in December for the shrimp feast.

BAH is now very popular, but that was not the case in the early years when it was sometimes difficult to find hosts or guests. The two firms (SunTrust was then CCB) were the two stalwarts during those early years.

For all other hopeful hosts, you have until Oct. 20 to submit your application for the drawing. See the current newsletter for all the conditions.
