Architect Matt Hale was named the first
winner of the 2006 Downtown Award during
the Downtown Revitalization
Corporation’s annual banquet last week.
“And he was very surprised,”
Nancy Tebeau, the interim downtown
manager, said.
“Matt has done a lot for the
downtown and the community, both
professionally and personally. He served
on the DRC board, serves on the design
and appearance committee and was on the
steering committees for the Renaissance
Plan and the Urban Design Code
overhaul,” Tebeau said.
Hale is changing the look of
Wake Forest through the buildings he has
and is designing. He designed the
Warren, Perry & Anthony office building
on South White Street, the La Foresta
restaurant building on Brooks Street,
and he has his office in the 2003 Hale
Building on South White Street that has
office on two levels and apartments
above.
With two partners, Hale has
purchased two older houses on East Jones
Avenue that formerly housed jovi’s
Market and Catering and John Lyon’s
Appraisal House. They intend to raze the
houses and build a multi-level,
multi-purpose building with retail
space, office space, parking, open space
and condominiums.
The Downtown Award was begun
because “The DRC wanted to recognize
people and businesses that are
contributing to our renaissance,” Tebeau
said, “and really want to recognize
those who are working day in and day out
to make downtown all it can be.”
There were about 15
nominations for this first award. |
