Last
week the Wake Forest Town Board
discussed keeping vegetation away from
high-voltage electric equipment,
including the pad-mounted transformers
for the underground service in
subdivisions.
This week Wake Forest Power
announced crews are doing 20-point
safety inspections at all the
high-voltage enclosures to make sure the
town complies with the safety standards
recommended by the National Electric
Safety Code.
Part of the safety check
list includes making sure there is
adequate clearance for ventilation and
for linemen to make repairs and
upgrades.
The NESC recommends there be
10 feet of clear access to the door of
pad-mounted transformers and 3 feet of
clearance on the other sides.
If you have a pad-mounted
transformer on your lot and must
landscape around it, Wake Forest Power
suggests:
-- do not plant ivy or other
climbing plants that will grow into the
metal enclosures.
-- grass, gravel or small
rocks are recommended within the 3- or
10-foot zones.
-- large rocks should be
placed at least 10 feet away from all
sides of the enclosures.
Linemen and repair crews
need to be able to see and get to the
equipment in winter and summer, and they
need to be able to work on the equipment
safely. |
