 Chief bringing fire truck
to cool off 4-Alarm Chili

Wake Forest Fire Chief Jerry Swift and chefs from Station #1 and Station #2 will compete at the first Four-Alarm Chili Cook-off at the Wake Forest Farmers’ Market on Sept. 23, and they will bring along a fire truck to put out any chili fires.

Since those threaten to be only internal, the fire trucks can serve to entertain children for the morning.

Jeannie Brogner will serve up her Texas Twister Chili for Station #1, and Bill Wandrack will compete for Station #2.

It is especially fitting for the local fire stations to compete because the chili cook-off is the last event in the market’s summer-long fund drive for the Bunn Fire Department.

It was fire trucks and fire fighters from Bunn who responded last winter when fire broke out at the Flying Pig Farm owned by Mike Morphy and Gayle Hoover. They sell 10 varieties of garlic, Shitake mushrooms, specialty flowers and several tasty garlic relishes at the market.

Next year the fire department with the best chili cooks will benefit from the market’s fund-raising efforts. Fire departments enter for free.

The rest of the chili cooks pay a $20 entry fee. The contest winner will split those fees with the Bunn Fire Department.

The chili cook-off, like the market, is held in the gazebo parking lot on South White Street. There is a cash prize (see above) for the winner and a special prize to the chef who uses the most local ingredients.

Along with the entry fee, chefs will pay $2.50 for the use of a chafing dish and heat, if needed.

The chili needs to be at the market between 8 and 9 a.m. for the tasting that begins at 9:30 with judging between 10 a.m. and noon. The prizes will be awarded at noon.

Call Terri Wilkinson at 556-1579 (terri_wilkinson@hotmail.com) or visit http://www.wakeforestmarket.org for more information and an entry form. You can also write your name, telephone, e-mail, and address on a piece of paper, make a $20 check to payable to Sherry Kretschmer. Bring it to the market in advance of the cook-off date or send it to Wake Forest Farmers’ Market, c/o Terri Wilkinson, 1200 Oak Grove Church Road, Wake Forest, NC 27587.

The Wake Forest Farmers’ Market is held every Saturday through October and features vendors from a 75-mile radius who sell organic vegetables, fruits and meats as well as soaps, baked goods, flowers and pottery.

Through September you can also purchase maps and buttons for the Carolina Farm Stewards Association Triangle East Farm Tour that will be held the weekend of Sept. 23-24.
