Wake
Forest has just received a $50,000 grant
from the state Department of
Transportation that will be used to
develop a comprehensive bicycle plan.
The town has just completed the draft of
a pedestrian plan, also funded by DOT,
and together with the greenway plan they
make up a complete alternative in-town
transportation network.
Biking and walking have
personal benefits such as cardiovascular
fitness and cost savings; benefits to
the greater society such as reduced
vehicle use, improved public health
because of a cleaner environment and
improved mobility for those without
vehicles; and environmental benefits
such as reduced air and noise pollution
and a reduction in the need for parking
lots, spaces and structures.
A complete bicycle system
will be able to accommodate all the
skill levels, from children learning to
ride their first bike with training
wheels to those who prefer to share
roads with fast-moving traffic. Most
teenage and adult riders, 80 percent of
them, prefer to use bike paths and bike
lanes on more local streets with less
traffic.
The town wants bike riders
and interested people to help develop
this plan. If you are interested, call
planner Ann Ayers at 570-7999 or send
her a message at
