Fine antique furniture owned by Edgar
and Minta Holding Folk when they lived
in the South Brick House, built in 1838
and one of the three oldest houses in
town, will go on sale Saturday, Sept.
17, at 11 a.m. at the Leland Little
Auction and Estate Sales company in
Hillsborough.
Gail Weisner, the real
estate agent handling the sale of the
historic house at the corner of South
Main Street and South Avenue, said her
understanding is there will be three
separate sales at different times.
Dr. Folk was an English
professor specializing in Chaucer at
Wake Forest College. After the college
moved to Winston-Salem, he commuted
until he retired.
Mrs. Folk, who had worked in
the college library, was for years one
of the foremost antique dealers in the
area, and she kept many of her best
pieces. Her professional eye for
quality if reflected in the personal
collection offered here, the sale
brochure says.
Those pieces include a
George III-style triple-pedestal banquet
table, a Queen Anne eight-leg hunt
table, an 18th-Century
Eastern North Carolina secretary and a
19th-Century Chinoiserie
cabinet.
Both the Wake Forest Board
of Commissioners and the board of
directors of the Wake Forest College
Birthplace Society have been approached
about purchasing the house for a public
purpose, and both have said they want to
see the house saved and restored,
preferably as a private dwelling.
Neither group thought it was an
appropriate building for any of their
programs.
The asking price is
$700,000, and estimates for the
necessary renovations rebuilding the
roof, new wiring and plumbing, air
conditioning and heating run from
$250,000 to $500,000.
