At the request of Assistant District
Attorney Susan Spurlin, a probable cause
hearing for Bettie Murchison has been
set back a month from Aug. 9 to Sept.
12.
Murchison, the former
director of the DuBois Center and now
the director of the W.E.B. DuBois
Community Development Corporation, was
charged last month with two felonies
connected to her tenure at the DuBois
Center, embezzlement of $169,000 and
conversion of property, a van.
Marshall Harvey, the acting
director at the CDC, said last week the
money was transferred from one account
to another to pay the mental health
counselors and other employees for their
work in January when they and Murchison
were employed at the DuBois Center. As
for the van, it was leased in
Murchison’s name and she offered to sign
it over to the DuBois Center as she was
leaving.
Murchison is currently on
administrative leave from the CDC at her
request.
Charles Putterman,
Murchison’s attorney, remains optimistic
and hopes to have good news before Sept.
