            The estimated cost of the building with parking is $1.57 million. The Clark company, organized this year in Delaware, has a North Carolina address in Mount Airy and is managed by the Obayashi company with North American headquarters in Los Angeles. Evanston Horner is the company which owns the land, and it was formed by James Street II, who lives near Wake Forest.

            Along with the permits for 89 new dwelling units in town issue this month – 61 for single-family homes, one for a mobile home and 27 for townhouses – the town also issued 15 demolition permits. Fourteen of those were for seven one-story duplex buildings owned by Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary on Rankin Court behind the Ledford Center. The fifteenth was for a mobile home at 537 East Juniper Ave.

            The numbers town officials are really watching this year are the homes that will be connected to the water system. Because the families in so many of the new homes built in Wake Forest recently consume a lot of water and irrigate their lawns, the town’s average and peak use have grown – and grown unexpectedly since the water/sewer merger with Raleigh was signed last year.

            The merger contract specifies the town will only have 4.91 million gallons a day of peak-use water until 2010 – and the town came within 1.1 mgd of that in 2005.

            Town leaders hope that by dialing back growth to 800 new homes a year and instituting a number of water-saving measures they can stretch that allocation through 2010.

            So – what really matters from a water standpoint is that there were 88 new home permits in June. The 89^th was for a single-family home in Richland Hills where Franklin County is supplying the water. That gives the town leaders a figure of 436 homes on the Wake Forest water system so far this year, or a possible 872 for the year, still above the 800 goal.

            When it comes to roads, schools, fire, police, administration and all the other town and county services, the relevant figure still is 89 new dwelling units for June and 521 for the first half of 2006.

            The list of permits for June follows. SFD is shorthand for single-family dwelling. The list gives the type of permit, the applicant, the address, the subdivision, the creek basin and the estimated cost. The Gazette adds the creek basin to remind readers where runoff from roofs, driveways, streets and lawns goes. Both Smith Creek and Richland Creek empty into the Neuse River which in turn empties into Pamlico Sound.
