Mayor
Vivian Jones, Town Manager Mark Williams
and Parks and Recreation Director Susan
Simpson have worked out an arrangement
with the Wake Forest Cultural Arts
Association to give the group the
technical help it needs.
Cultural Arts, by itself or
with others, stages Six Sundays in
Spring, the DuBois Jazz Festival, the
Autumn Arts Festival, the Artists Studio
Tour and the garden tour. Its many
activities have become a strain on an
all-volunteer organization, and the new
chair for 2006-2007, Kathryn Spiegel,
asked the town for $7,392 to hire a
part-time director.
Instead, Jones suggested the
group get assistance from the parks and
recreation department, which handles a
number of programs through the county’s
United Arts organization.
After consulting with the
board, Spiegel said she and board member
Jim Wallace, told the town “we accepted
their offer gratefully.” Spiegel said
this week she is going to meet with
Simpson soon to tell her what they need.
“I think Cultural Arts is
very pleased that so much effort went
into finding us some assistance,”
Spiegel said. “We take that to mean that
the community values our contributions
and wants us to continue. And this is
going to be a very exciting year with
the institution of the Task Force for
the Wake Forest Performing Arts Center!”
There was no mention of the
other town contributions to outside
organizations during last week’s town
board meeting, but the commissioners did
approve funding the Wake Forest Boys and
Girls Club request for $7,500 while
cutting the contribution to Southlight
by the same amount.
The request by the Wake
Forest College Birthplace Society for
$550,000 toward the planned annex at the
Calvin Jones House was not funded in the
2006-2007 budget, but there have been
meetings and the subject will be on the
agenda for the July 11 work session. |
