Bettie Murchison, the director of the
W.E.B. DuBois Community Development
Corporation, was recently informed she
was a semifinalist in this year’s Volvo
for Life search for and celebration of
everyday heroes.
Beverly Whisnant nominated
Murchison for the award for the work she
did as director of the DuBois Center, a
position she has since left.
The grand award winner
receives a Volvo for life plus a
donation of $50,000 to a charity of
his/her choice, a trip to New York City
for the awards ceremony and a starring
role in a documentary about the award
heroes. There are also six category
finalists and, this year, 74
semi-finalists including Murchison. They
receive a letter and a certificate of
merit.
