Is it time for a performing arts center
in Wake Forest? A cultural arts study
done several years ago said the time
would come when town residents would
want one.
Paige Hamp and a group of
like-minded people are putting together
a task force to study the possibility.
Mayor Vivian Jones said
Tuesday night she and Commissioner
Margaret Stinnett had met with the group
recently. The study also said a
dedicated person would be needed to
spearhead the project, Jones said, and
that person seems to be Hamp, a
professional fund-raiser who lives in
Wake Forest. She organizes the Education
Ball for Communities in Schools, raising
$300.000.
“She’s already talked to
people in New York and Los Angeles who
are interested. She’s talking about
bring performers here and also having
some opportunities for kids,” Jones
said.
“What she would like from
the town is a letter saying we agree
with the concept and are willing to
participate as a partner in some way,”
Jones said. That participation would not
include money at this time.
One of the possibilities
might be something like the arrangement
Raleigh has with the Raleigh Little
Theatre. After the building was built,
it was deeded to the city, which
maintains the property and rents it to
the theater group for $1 a year.
The commissioners informally
all agreed Jones could write the letter. |
