 Hoops raises over $12,000,
a new record

The 11th Hoops for Wake Forest set a new fund-raising record Saturday, netting over $12,000 for seven local charities.

There were over 250 players who hit Brooks Street. Early showers delayed the start, but Mike Johnson, one of the organizers, said, “everyone held tight and the tournament was a total success.” The games began about 9:30 when the sun came out.

More than 100 volunteers from local organizations helped with that success for the players, who ranged from 7 to 66 years.

It is one of the town’s most successful fund-raising events because it involves so many local organizations. In the last 10 years, it has raised over $100,000 for local groups, and this year the Wake Forest Woman’s Club, the Wake Forest Kiwanis Club, the Wake Forest Rotary Club, the Wake Forest Junior Women’s Club and the Wake Forest-Rolesville High School Band Boosters will share the proceeds just as their members share in the planning and hands-on help during the event.

The hard-working members of the board for Hoops are:

            - Chip Russell, the town’s planning director

            - Greg Harrington, the chief of police

            - Johnna Matthews, the secretary-treasurer for Hoops

            - Sue Anthony, senior partner at Warren, Perry & Anthony

            - Alphonza Merritt, production manager at The Wake Weekly

            - Lisa Newhouse, business banking relationship manager at SunTrust Bank

            - Stephen Barrington, town commissioner and investment representative at Edward Jones

            - Lowell Bonnett, owner of Right Image Marketing

            - Mark Johnson, general manager at Wal*Mart

            - Bob White, president and CEO at Wake Forest Federal Savings & Loan

            - Susan Simpson, the town’s parks and recreation director

            - Mike Johnson, chairperson of the Hoops board and president of MRJ Management Company

Hoops is also successful because it involves a great number of local businesses and groups as sponsors.

The grand sponsor this year was WRS Realty, the group which developed and owns Wake Pointe Shopping Center (Wal-Mart).

This year’s major sponsors were Stock Builders, Wake Forest Federal Savings and Loan, St. Lawrence Homes, Wal-Mart, SunTrust Bank, BB&T and Warren, Perry and Anthony.

The gold sponsors were The Wake Weekly, Bright Funeral Homes, Hartsfield and Nash Insurance, the Town of Wake Forest, Sport Court-Family Game Courts, Johnson Lexus, Charles and Kay Grantham, Allstate Insurance, R. Howard Mitchell CPA, Capital Bank, Cawthorne, Moss and Panciera Surveyors, DAB International Car Sales, Demund Suh Dentistry, Edward Jones Investments, Hangers Cleaners, Kathryn Drake Attorney, SmartBuilt, Landmark Construction, Southern Designs, Allied Rehab, Wake Forest Health Club, Deacon Investments, Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary and The Wake Forest Gazette.

The silver sponsors were Strickland Auto, The Border Restaurant, Havana Jax Café, Wayne Choplin, Las Margaritas, Michael Dearstyne DDS, Pettyjohn’s Cleaning, Rosemart Shell Station, Young’s Gymnastics, Appraisal House, Southeastern Emergency Services, Carolina Chimney Sweep, Green and Wooten Insurance, Wake Forest Family Eyecare, Electric Motor Shop, Millridge Investments Company, Janko Import Cars, Shuckers Oyster Bar, Essentials Massage, Ammons-Pittman Realty, The Forks Cafeteria and Heritage Family Care.
