 Forget the ‘canes. It’s b-ball
season as Hoops hits the street

Hundreds of avid basketball players of all ages and sizes will hit the asphalt, not the hardwoods, Saturday for the 11th Hoops for Wake Forest.

About 600 players, over 2,000 spectators and 100 or so volunteers will be on Brooks Street between East Owen and East Elm for the three-on-three competitions.

It is one of the town’s most successful fund-raising events because it involves so many local organizations. In the last 10 years, it has raised over $100,000 for local groups, and this year the Wake Forest Woman’s Club, the Wake Forest Kiwanis Club, the Wake Forest Rotary Club, the Wake Forest Junior Women’s Club and the Wake Forest-Rolesville High School Band Boosters will share the proceeds just as their members share in the planning and hands-on help during the event.

It is also successful because it involves a great number of local businesses and groups as sponsors.

The grand sponsor this year is WRS Realty, the group which developed and owns Wake Pointe Shopping Center (Wal-Mart).

This year’s major sponsors are Stock Builders, Wake Forest Federal Savings and Loan, St. Lawrence Homes, Wal-Mart, SunTrust Bank, BB&T and Warren, Perry and Anthony.

The gold sponsors are The Wake Weekly, Bright Funeral Homes, Hartsfield and Nash Insurance, the Town of Wake Forest, Sport Court-Family Game Courts, Johnson Lexus, Charles and Kay Grantham, Allstate Insurance, R. Howard Mitchell CPA, Capital Bank, Cawthorne, Moss and Panciera Surveyors, DAB International Car Sales, Demund Suh Dentistry, Edward Jones Investments, Hangers Cleaners, Kathryn Drake Attorney, SmartBuilt, Landmark Construction, Southern Designs, Allied Rehab, Wake Forest Health Club, Deacon Investments, Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary and The Wake Forest Gazette.

The silver sponsors are Strickland Auto, The Border Restaurant, Havana Jax Café, Wayne Choplin, Las Margaritas, Michael Dearstyne DDS, Pettyjohn’s Cleaning, Rosemart Shell Station, Young’s Gymnastics, Appraisal House, Southeastern Emergency Services, Carolina Chimney Sweep, Green and Wooten Insurance, Wake Forest Family Eyecare, Electric Motor Shop, Millridge Investments Company, Janko Import Cars, Shuckers Oyster Bar, Essentials Massage, Ammons-Pittman Realty, The Forks Cafeteria and Heritage Family Care.

In the past, the tournament has raised money to help fund a summer camp for disadvantaged children, the local DARE program, Shop with a Cop, Camp Kanata, Tri-Area Ministries, the WF-R High School Band and Kiwanis Park.

Registration forms are still available for the variety of teams – the sponsors try to find a suitable division for everyone, even couch potatoes – at the Wake Forest Health Club at 2109 S. Main St., at http://www.hoopsforwakeforest.com or in last week’s edition of The Wake Weekly on page 4A. Children 12 and younger play for free. Teenagers 13 through 15 pay $20; 16 through 18 pay $40 and adults 19 and older pay $90.

Winners receive trophies, and all players receive a Hoops T-shirt.
