For the fourth year, volunteers will
paddle in and walk along the Neuse
River, picking up the trash and garbage
on Saturday.
April 1 is the annual Neuse
River Spring Cleanup. Last year over 200
people turned out to help and more than
30,000 pounds of trash were collected
along the 50 miles of river from the
Falls Dam to Smithfield. This year they
are also adding a 12-mile stretch in
Kinston U.S. 70 bridge to the N.C. 55
bridge
Because of the attention the
cleanup day has focused on the river,
Upper Neuse Riverkeeper Dean Naujoks
said, “we are seeing less trash being
dumped.”
The day begins at 8 a.m. for
those volunteers who have their own
canoes or kayaks. They can check in at
five locations: Milburnie Dam, Buffaloe
Road canoe launch off Elizabeth St.,
Poole Road canoe launch, Smithfield
Commons, and the U.S. 70 bridge in
Kinston.
From 8 to 10 a.m. there will
be free canoe rentals on a first-come,
first-served basis at Falls Dam,
Milburnie Dam, Smithfield Commons and
the U.S. 70 bridge in Kinston.
Check-in will be at 10 a.m.
for those volunteers who are going to
walk the banks of the river and clean up
trash. They will check in at the
Buffaloe Road canoe launch, the Poole
Road canoe launch, the Milburnie Dam
canoe launch, Clayton Elementary School
on N.C. 42, Smithfield Commons and the
U.S. 70 bridge in Kinston.
Volunteers will receive
gloves and trash bags when they check
in. They must sign an insurance waiver,
and any volunteer under 18 must be
accompanied by a parent.
