After talking with Rolesville
Commissioner Frank Eagles about that
town’s attitude toward and standards for
development, all I can say is: Why don’t
we do the same?
Wake Forest could have
building standards for the size of
houses and minimum quality of building
materials.
Wake Forest could look at a
project and its surroundings and insist
that streets be widened in a rational
fashion instead of leaving all those ins
and outs, three lanes here and two lanes
there.
Wake Forest could insist
that developers not only dedicate the
sections of greenway but also pave the
trails, put in benches and include
maintenance by the homeowners’
associations.
I certainly do not know what
the two new Wake Forest commissioners
plan to do, but I would wholeheartedly
suggest they look at what Rolesville has
been doing and begin to develop
guidelines suited for our town.
At the same time, I suggest
they develop a plan to preserve the tree
canopy. We are losing trees at a
frightful rate. All you have to do is
look at the naked red clay – someone
said 70 acres worth – on the south side
of Rogers Road at the Marshall Farm Road
intersection. No matter what trees are
eventually planted, they will not
provide a canopy for at least 20 years,
maybe more.
I think voters were asking,
why don’t we, when they went to the
polls in November. We need to listen and
act. |
