Mary Knight Ashe
Mary Knight Ashe of Raleigh died July 28, 2010, at her home. Mary was born on February 9, 1949, in Rocky Mount. She is the daughter of William Everette and Marjorie Bell Knight.
Always serving others, Mary’s life had two major focuses: early childhood education and serving others through the church. Mary served as Director of Alexander County Schools Head Start, and continued in the work for quality enhancements for young children’s programs through Smart Start for Wake County. She also did training and product development for Environments, Inc. in Beaufort, S.C., then program development for More At Four in Raleigh and development of Project Enlightenment Early Reading First federal grants in Raleigh. She has developed professional training and resources for the S.C. Department of Education’s Federal Professional Development Grant. She was very appreciative of the leadership opportunities and support of co-workers in all of these areas.
To continue her desire to serve others through the church, Mary was ordained at Knightdale Baptist Church as a minister in 1985 after graduating from Southeastern Seminary with a Masters of Art in religious education. She served in three churches starting in 1980 in Wilmington as minister of youth and education at Myrtle Grove Baptist Church, continuing as minister of youth and education at Knightdale Baptist Church in 1983 and moving to Hiddenite Baptist Church in the same role in 1988.
Mary established the Raleigh Baptist Association Christian Woman’s Job Corps in 1999. One of her greatest joys in serving the church has been through the Woman’s Missionary Union of North Carolina, where she served on the executive board and as assistant recording secretary. She is grateful for the opportunity WMUNC provided to teach women in many states in the US and South Africa.
Mary has enjoyed a delightful marriage to Terry Barr Ashe for 40 years. They have enjoyed sharing in ministry, family and currently the partnership in ministry at Falls Baptist Church in Raleigh. Additionally, Mary is survived by her two children, Michele Campbell and husband, Casey Campbell, of San Antonio, Texas, and Richard Ashe and wife, Candace Ashe, of Winston-Salem. She is especially proud of her two granddaughters, Lane and Aubrey Campbell of San Antonio, Texas. Also surviving is Mary’s sister, Anne Britt and husband, Keith Britt, of Cary as well as nieces and nephews in North Carolina and Georgia.
