David Berry
David John Clifford Berry died suddenly in his home on Friday, May 7, 2010. Born in Washington, D. C., in 1948, he was a long-time resident of Millbrook, North Raleigh and Wake Forest. He was a graduate of Millbrook High School and St. Andrews Presbyterian College.
David had two distinguished careers: radio and real estate. He was instrumental in founding WQDR and served as salesperson, sales manager, and station manager.
While at WQDR, he won the Peabody Award (radio’s equivalent of the Pulitzer Prize) for a series of reports exposing the health problems of Viet Nam veterans. He was also presented with the Abe Lincoln Award for the same series. He was also a general manager of WPTF/Durham Life Broadcasting. In 1984 he participated in the start up and launching of WRDU, where he served as general manager and vice president.
In 1987 David embarked on his second career. He and his then-wife Vicki started Vicki Berry Realty in Wake Forest, later adding the CENTURY 21 franchise. David quickly excelled in the real estate sales industry, achieving the highest CENTURY 21 awards, and growing into an outstanding and highly-respected broker-in-charge. Until the day he left us, he was enthusiastically helping his agents succeed and giving them a chuckle with his wit and wry humor.
He is survived by his children Cathleen and David Jr.; grandchildren, Emily and Tristan; his ex-wife Vicki Berry; brothers, Crist Berry (Patricia) and John Nicholas (Joan). He was preceded in death by his father, Bob, and his mother, Ann Berry.
David was happiest when spending time with his family. Over his son’s 11 years of playing sports, David never missed a game. And his daughter will always remember her Dad’s smiling face at cheerleading competitions, Girl Scout ceremonies, and long dance recitals. His children’s friends were always welcome at his home. He genuinely cared for young adults, freely volunteering his time to the Youth Group of North Wake Church and to Campus Life Ministries.
The place that was dearest to his heart was Ridgeview Park, a religious camp-meeting community in western Pennsylvania. A third-generation resident, David returned every summer to Ridgeview to draw upon the companionship of his children, grandchildren, brothers, cousins and life-long friends. Anyone who knew David knew of his love for Ridgeview. His ashes will be scattered there.
David was a man of deep faith in God and had accepted Christ as his savior. While it might seem that his life ended too soon, he would remind you that “his days were numbered before he was born.”
A celebration of David’s life will be held at North Wake Church at 1212 S. Main St., Wake Forest, on Thursday, May 13, at 3 p.m. A visitation with the family will be held in the lobby of the Worship Center at North Wake Church from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, May 12.
David requested live plants rather than cut flowers, or, preferably, donations in his memory to be sent to Ridgeview Park Association, 281 Ridgeview Road, Derry, PA 15627.
