Christine Johnson Newman
November 25, 1923, to April 20, 2010
On April 20, 2010, Chris Newman went to be with Jesus following a lengthy illness.
he was living most recently at Falls River Court in Raleigh, where she was a much loved resident. Before that she had lived many years in Winston-Salem, where she was an active member of Centenary Methodist Church, held offices in the Ladies Circle and United Methodist Women, and served as a volunteer Contact Crisis Counselor.
Chris will be remembered for her serving attitude and strong love for God, her family and her community. She was known for her gracious hospitality and abilities as a seamstress, painter, gardener and flower arranger. Chris rarely traveled beyond North Carolina but held a lifelong passion for supporting mission work taking the gospel of Jesus Christ to other lands.
Chris was born to Ivey and Blanche Johnson in Statesville, where she grew up, was educated, and started working. For that reason, Statesville was “home” for her no matter where else she moved. On graduating from Mitchell College in Statesville, Chris worked for Heddrick Manufacturing, where she met and married Howard Newman, who passed away in 1993. She is survived by her daughter, Anna Newman Heimbach, son-in-law Daniel Heimbach, and grandsons Jonathan and Joel Heimbach, all of Wake Forest.
Wanting to serve others even in death, Chris has arranged to have her body donated as an anatomical gift to the Bowman Gray School of Medicine in Winston-Salem. A memorial service celebrating her life will be held May 2 at 2 p.m. in Appleby Chapel, located on the first floor of Appleby Hall on the campus of Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest. All who knew her, loved her, or were touched by her are welcome to attend.
Her family expresses grateful thanks to the staff of Falls River Court for giving mother such loving care it truly exceeded the call of duty. We also deeply appreciate the amazing service of Hospice of Wake County rendered at all hours of the day or night. If desired, contributions may be given in the memory of Chris Newman to Hospice of Wake County, or to Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, in Wake Forest, N.C.
