Minnie Lee Cole Mabry
Minnie Lee Mabry, 92, of Wake Forest, passed away on Monday, Jan. 25, 2010, at Wake Med in Raleigh, surrounded in love by her two daughters.
A native of Wake Forest, she was one of eight children born to Ida and Walter Cole and was the only one of the children to finish high school. She accomplished this feat while also working full time at Royal Cotton Mill to help support her family.
he was preceded in death by her husband, the Reverend Leland Mabry, and son-in-law, Alan Evans. She met Leland when he was a student at Wake Forest College and the pastor at Glen Royal Baptist Church. Pastor Mabry served five churches in North Carolina and three in Virginia. The Mabry’s also lived in Kentucky and Tennessee while Pastor Mabry was attending the seminary.
As a young married lady, Minnie Lee loved recounting a travel story – the long train journey, with stops and connections from Wake Forest to Edmonton, Alberta, Canada to visit her husband who was serving as a U.S. Army Chaplain. The incredible scenery on this journey with a side trip to Banff was forever embedded in her memory.
urviving are her sister and brother, Estelle and Marlon Cole of Wake Forest; her daughters, Betty Evans of Apex and Janie Weber of Princeton, N.J., and her husband, Joe; four grandsons, Ivan Evans of Newton and his wife, Kris Anne, Erik Evans of Raleigh, Scott Evans of Charlotte and his wife, Elizabeth, and Daniel Weber of Princeton, N.J.; plus life-long friends, Lola Ann and Max Jarrell of Asheboro.
he will be remembered fondly for her strong and independent spirit and her admirable courage for withstanding years of debilitating pain as a result of an auto accident in 1949. She was a people person, inviting new friends and community leaders into her home for meaningful discussions and fellowship. Her devotion to her Christian faith was ever present. One of her favorite books was “The Greatest Thing in the World,” a testament to God’s love. Through the years she gave this book to dozens of people, some of which she met for the very first time.
Her brother and sister speak highly of her sense of humor, love for reading and her entrepreneurial spirit during the Great Depression, being resourceful to meet a financial need. Her nieces and nephews remember the huge dictionary kept close at hand for word games she created for them. Her grandsons and sons-in-law were so thankful for her affirming words during good and difficult times. Her daughters feel blessed to have had a remarkable mother, whose faith was uplifting and motto to always stand up for what is right…inspiring. Her friends marveled at her zest to broaden her horizons and appreciated that she was such a good listener and mentor.
A memorial service celebrating Minnie Lee’s life will take place on Sunday, Jan. 30, at 3 p.m. at Glen Royal Baptist Church.
The family has asked that floral donations be limited to potted flowering plants, so that in the spirit of love these pots of cheer can be distributed to the sick and homebound. Memorial contributions may be made to Glen Royal Baptist Church.
The family wishes to express their thanks for all the kindness shown by so many. Minnie Lee said that she was blessed to have made so many new friends at the Hillside Nursing Home where she resided for the past 22 months.
