Laura Newhall Walters

Mrs. Laura Newhall Walters, 88, of Wake Forest, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 26, 2009, during her short stay under the caring comfort of Wake County Hospice at Rex Hospital.
he was one of the original residents of Turnberry, a senior apartment complex in Wake Forest, where she made many close friends throughout the years.
Mrs. Walters was born in Boston, Mass., on May 27, 1921, to the late Frank W. and Mary Stephens Newhall. She was the youngest of four daughters. She was predeceased by her sisters and brothers-in law and one nephew, Kenneth S. Floyd of Fairmont.
Mrs. Walters was married to Julius E. Walters and had three children, Julia, J.E. and Karen. Mr. Walters died unexpectedly from a heart attack at age 50 and Mrs. Walters, a homemaker, suddenly became head of house with two teenagers and a 12-year-old. She persevered, worked hard, and gave all three children the opportunity to go to college. She had always been a firm believer in schooling and pushed each child in their own way to do their best and reach their fullest potential.
he also managed to do this and everything else in life in spite of the amputation of her right hand below the elbow in an auto accident when she was 16. She was determined. She never had a nanny, cook, housekeeper or other assistance. And the word handicapped was never allowed in her home. She always figured out a way to do anything she wanted. Among her most favorite things were baking, (she was famous for her butterfly cookies), fishing from the coast to a neighbor’s pond, flowers, and gardening. She was very artistic and had an innate decorating sense which she passed onto her daughters. Her son inherited her lovely voice and love of fishing as also did her youngest daughter, Karen Dale, whom she lost earlier this year after a long battle with liver disease. Her life was filled with love of family, good friends, one devoted miniature poodle, Winnie, and her never-wavering faith in God.
Left to mourn and remember her are her daughter, Julia and husband, Larry Takacs, of Youngsville; son, J.E. Walters and wife, Betty, of  Smithfield; Karen’s children, Laura Whitney Dale of Franklinton and PFC Joshua S. Dale of Schofield Army Barracks, Hawaii; J.E.’s daughter, Stefanie Nichols of Wichita, Kan.; and great-grandson, William B. Walters of Goldsboro.
A graveside funeral service will be held at 2 o’clock Wednesday afternoon, December 30, 2009, at Meadowbrook Cemetery in Lumberton, with the Rev. Dr. Ray Ammons officiating.
Flowers are welcome or memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Wake County, 250 Hospice Circle, Raleigh, NC 27607.
