Frank Watson Smith

He was the former owner of Smith Furniture Company in Wake Forest and was subsequently employed at Montgomery-Green and Raleigh Office Supply.
He was a proud graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he met his wife of 47 years, Carol Chapman Smith, who survives.
He served in the U.S. Army after college graduation. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Lauren Smith and husband, Jack Kelly, of Greensboro, grandsons Joe Kelly, wife, Camrin, and great-grandson, Patrick,  Frank Kelly and wife, Darby, of San Diego, Calif.; son, Stuart and wife, Karen, and grandson, Brendan, (“Buster” to his grandfather) of Arden; father-in-law, Jay Chapman of Florence, S.C.; and sister-in-law, Susie Craven of Atlanta.

He was a past senior warden of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Wake Forest, a past director of the Wake Forest Chamber of Commerce, a past member of the Wake Forest Rotary Club and of the Wake Forest Historical Preservation Commission.
He loved Tar Heel basketball, jazz and classical music, his many friends, great food and wine, a good (or even a bad) joke; traveling and gardening. He was a voracious reader, was an avid collector of local art and poured an abundance of love, labor and skill into completely renovating his historic home in Wake Forest. His biggest joy, however, came from his family, who thankfully gathered for a family vacation in Folly Beach, S.C., just a few weeks ago.
