Obituaries

Susan Gayle Neeley PhD
March 10, 1947 – October 5, 2009
Dr. Susan Gayle Neeley of Wake Forest was born in Raeford, the daughter of Richard E. Neeley and Jessie Parker Neeley.
She received her BA from Queens College in 1969 and doctorate from the psychology program of N.C. State University in 1976. Her 30-year practice of psychotherapy led to many grateful patients who grew stronger through her ability to apply her remarkable intelligence in a way that was empathetic and insightful.
Ever the alpha female, she was the one in the room whose vote counted twice, a giver, yet a keen competitor, skilled at bridge, pool and anagram champion, friend of the arts, gatherer of people, fierce and lovely, the most conscientious person you ever met, the thinker of big thoughts and doer of the deeds that followed, wise woman, full of spirit and a sophisticated spirituality. She was Wake Forest Citizen of the year in 2000.
She leaves behind her husband, Drew Bridges, MD, who was truly loved and occasionally chastised to his betterment; a daughter, Suzanna Neeley Bridges of New York City, to whom she passed both her music genes and her beauty; and a younger brother, Richard L. Neeley of Incline Village, Nev., who shared her journey the longest.
She also leaves many dear friends who continue to marvel at her courage to live lovingly and fully despite lingering illness, enduring always, then choosing the design of her departing, leaving behind her broken earthly body for what lies beyond.
A memorial service celebrating and honoring her life will be held at 3 o’clock Saturday afternoon, October 10, 2009, at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 830 Durham Road, Wake Forest, with a reception to follow in the parish hall.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Foundation of Hope at www.walkforhope.com.
