Ida B. Wells-Barnett was born a slave in Mississippi but she became a teacher at 16, graduated from college, worked as a newspaper editor and writer and ran for a seat in Congress when she was 68.
But author Carolyn Nur Wistrand’s play, Miss Ida B. and the Lynchin’ Tree, depicts Wells-Barnett’s early life when she sued the Chesapeake-Ohio Railroad and campaigned against lynching.
Two of Wake Forest-Rolesville High’s outstanding actresses, Raven Bennett and Arielle Taylor, will star in this play, Marie Jones, their drama teacher said.
The play does contain mature themes and language and is not recommended for young children.
The play, a part of the school’s celebration of Black History Month, will take the stage Thursday and Friday, Feb. 4 and 5, at 7 p.m. in the school that is currently on the Heritage High campus at 1150 Forestville Road. Admission is $3. The play is also available for tour to local organizations; to book it, call 946-0617.
