Saturday learn how to nurture fall tomatoes

Do you want to continue your tomato bounty until the frost?
Then come to the Wake Forest Farmers’ Market Saturday, July 10, for the three workshops where local Master Gardener Katherine Spiegel will demonstrates how to root new plants that will extend the life of your existing plants. The demonstrations will take place at 9, 10 and 11 a.m.
Also, Spiegel and other Master Gardeners will explain how you can avoid, prevent and control other tomato problems.
If you are not a gardener or if you want to add tomato variety to your salads and other dishes, you will find an array of heirloom and standard tomatoes in several of the vendor stalls.
The market vendors are celebrating tomatoes all month as well as selling them. On July 17 Chef Cindy Karas will prepare her outstanding gazpacho, and on Aug. 7 Robin Roper with the Family and Consumer Sciences Program at N.C. State will demonstrate how to safely can tomatoes and other foods.
Tomatoes are not the only stars at the market. Louis and Shirley Jackson are back with their bountiful blueberries and raspberries, both fresh and in jams and jellies. At Outta Grandma’s Garden, Brian and Joye Keith have fresh-picked Silver Queen corn along with snap beans, squash, tomatoes and tasty salsa Joye makes. You will find Silver Queen at other vendors, too. Mike and Gayle are now harvesting fresh garlic at their Flying Pig Farm, and Steve at Big Oak Farm is offering heirloom tomatoes along with berries, peppers, corn and other vegetables.
Every week you can also find jewelry, knitted goods and yarn, sunbonnets, aprons, honey, baked goods of all descriptions, lotions, soaps, garden ornaments, pottery, wooden bowls and kitchen tools, and beautiful flowers.
The market will be open from 8 a.m. to noon in the depot parking lot on South White Street.
