Engineer outlines first steps of South Main work

Published Mar 10, 2010

The winning contractor, Asphalt Experts from Durham, began work on the South Main Street widening project last week and will probably be on the job for about six months.
The work will add a passing lane to the existing two lanes between Forestville and Forbes roads along with curb and gutter and a sidewalk.
At the request of Engineering Director Eric Keravuori, Jason Pace, the engineer with Kimley-Horn Associates who is administering the construction for the town, provided the following scenario for the first three weeks, March 1 through March 19.
-- Three entities will be working on relocations
+ Public Service of North Carolina will finish relocating natural gas lines on the northeast end of the project near Forestville Baptist Church
+ Century Link [most recently called Embarq] will work on relocating telephone lines along the entire work site
+ Town of Wake Forest crews will remove the power poles on the north or west side of the street.
-- Asphalt Experts will clear trees and other objects on the northwest side of the street and install the silt fences.
-- Asphalt Experts will be working mostly on the northwest side of the road during the first phase of construction. There will be a temporary traffic shift to the south or east side of the street to give the firm’s crews more work room. There will be signs to advise drivers of the shift.
-- Once the traffic shift has been made, the contractor will begin to install storm drains on the northwest side.
-- The sidewalk will be closed in the work area for the entire time work is underway. Please avoid this area if you are walking.
Questions about the project should be directed to Pace at 677-2135 or Keravuori at 554-6122.
