Brief Bits

Part of the start-up funding for the Wake Forest express bus service came from a reverse-commute grant for people living in Raleigh and working in town. During this week’s town board summer retreat, Mayor Vivian Jones said an overlooked segment of those commuting from Raleigh has turned up.
Someone familiar with the express bus ridership recently told Jones that some people come from Raleigh in the mornings to panhandle in Wake Forest because the people here are more generous.

In his ending comment at the Wake Forest Town Board’s mid-year retreat Monday, Commissioner Peter Thibodeau asked if there is any way to ban the people – usually teen-aged males – who stand on a sidewalk or at an intersection twirling signs for a business. He said they create a traffic hazard. Apparently the people who impersonate Lady Liberty, Uncle Sam or a slope-shouldered Chick-fil-A cow are not hazards.

Do you hate to see the bottles, fast-food bags, plastic bags and all the other trash along your roads? Wake County is undertaking a new initiative to help combat the litter, and you can help the staff pinpoint the worst places and the worst offenders. Go to www.wakegov.com/recycling to take the survey.
You might note in the comments that other states – Maine is one good example – have almost no litter because they have a redemption program for bottles along with a strong state stance against litter. Or just put in what you hope the county and the state will do.
