Bike races and fair Sunday

Published May 13, 2009

The second Historic Downtown Wake Forest Criterium sponsored by the Raleigh All-Stars Cycling Team will be held all day Sunday, May 17, and the Town of Wake Forest will hold a bike fair for young cyclists.
The adults will be riding for $4,500 in cash and prizes, and the profits from the day will benefit the Boys & Girls Club of Wake Forest.
The race course circles downtown, going from South White to Elm Avenue to Brooks Street to Wait Avenue and back to South White Street.
There will be children’s races and a hiatus in competitive racing for an hour beginning at 12:35 p.m.
The Bicycle Safety Fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Renaissance Place, the former Wake Forest Plaza, at the corner of East Elm Avenue and Brooks Street. It is designed to teach safe bicycle riding skills to children from 5 to 14 and their parents.
Cyclesafe.org staff and other adults with cycling experience will work with children on safe riding techniques through an obstacle course that simulates real-life situations.
Saturday a parent or guardian must sign a waiver to allow their child or children to participate. Children are encouraged to bring their own bicycles and helmets. Free bicycle inspections will take place at the start of the obstacle course. Loaner bicycles and helmets will be available on a first-come first-served basis.
The Wake Forest Kiwanis Club and Warren, Perry, Narron, Shackleford & Mackay Attorneys at Law are co-sponsors with the town for the safety fair.
