            Wake Forest’s annual Arbor Day Celebration will be held Thursday, March 11, at 10 a.m. in the Community House on West Owen Avenue. Everyone is invited to this free event.

            The town’s monthly art, reception and shopping event – Art After Hours – will get underway at 5 p.m. and last through 9 along South White and other downtown streets Friday, March 12. See the article in this week’s Gazette for all the attractions.

            You will lose an hour of sleep Saturday night-Sunday morning, March 13-14, as Daylight Saving Time begins.

            The monthly Pancake and Sausage Breakfast sponsored by American Legion Post 187 will be held Sunday, March 14, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the American Legion Hall at 225 E. Holding Ave. Enjoy an all-you-can-eat plate for $5 per person with a cap of $20 per family.

            The Wake Forest Town Board will hold its regular business meeting Tuesday, March 16, beginning at 7 p.m. in town hall. It will also be televised live on Channel 10.

            It is one of the Friends of the Wake Forest Library’s most popular events, the program about genealogy, and it will be held again Tuesday, March 16, at 7 p.m. in the Northern Wake Regional Center next to the library on East Holding Avenue. Genealogy experts Connie Nourse and Jennifer Bell will discuss how to use the Internet to investigate your family history. It is free and open to everyone.

            The Wake Forest Town Board will hold a work session Thursday, March 18, to discuss the draft Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) for 2010-2015. The meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m. in town hall.

            Explore downtown Wake Forest while you try to win $100 in gift certificates from downtown merchants Saturday, March 20, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Downtown Revitalization Corporation is sponsoring the Downtown Scavenger Hunt.

            The Easter Bunny will be busy Saturday, March 20, hiding over 3,000 eggs on the grounds of the J. Carroll Joyner Park the Wake Forest Parks and Recreation Department’s annual Easter Egg Hunt, and eager youngsters will spend the afternoon searching for them. The older children, ages 9 through 12, will begin their hunt at 1:30 p.m.; younger children, ages 5 through 8, will search beginning at 2:15 p.m.; and the very youngest, 4-year-olds and younger, will have their hunt at 3 p.m. There will be several golden eggs with special prizes. In case of rain, the eggs hunts will be held at the Flaherty Park Community Center.

            The Wake Forest Historical Association’s quarterly meeting on Sunday, March 21, will feature Ches Crow describing the exhibits you will see later this year in the new Wake Forest Birthplace Museum. The meeting is open to everyone and will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. at St. John’s Episcopal Church on Durham Road.

            The annual Spring Neuse River Cleanup will be held Saturday, April 10, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. It is sponsored by the Neuse Riverkeeper Foundation. For information about the sites and to register, go to http://www.neuseriver.org/events/neuserivercleanup.html.

            The tenth annual Steak & Steak Dinner, the fundraising and appreciation event for the Wake Forest Boys & Girls Club, will be held Thursday, April 15, beginning at 6 p.m. Tickets are $15 per person or $25 per couple and available at the door. The speaker will be Charles Johnson, who played for the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Philadelphia Eagles, the New England Patriots and the Buffalo Bills. Go have a good dinner and learn how the club is helping our children.

            The Wake Forest Fire Department’s annual Fish Fry is set for Friday, April 16, from 11 a.m. “until the food runs out,” Chief Freddie Lynn said this week. We are pretty sure you will be able to get an $8 plate through dinnertime. Fried flounder filet, cole slaw and potatoes are on the menu again along with all those yummy desserts the woman’s auxiliary and friends bring to sell.

            The Anthony J. Trentini Scholarship Banquet & Silent Auction will be held Saturday, April 17, at The Forks Cafeteria. Lee Shaffer, who played basketball for UNC and is in the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame, will be the speaker.

            Mark your calendar for Saturday, May 1, for two events: the 30th annual Meet in the Street from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. along South White Street and the annual Used Book Sale sponsored by the Friends of the Wake Forest Library, which will be held again in the Northern Wake Senior Center on East Holding Avenue.

            The second Wake Forest Cemetery Tour will be held Saturday, May 8, with a rain date of May 15. The earliest marked grave site is that of Charles R. Merriam, who died in 1837. He was the brother of Mrs. Samuel Wait. Go to www.wakeforestnc.gov, click on “government” then “advisory boards” and “cemetery advisory board” and you will find on the right side of the page a link to two documents, the guide for the 2009 walking tour with a list of all the burials to that time and an overview with a short history of the cemetery and short biographies of many buried there.
